Karla has been teaching music at Capital Music for 14 years. She grew up in a very musical family in the Washington D.C. area, and began her musical education at age 2 and continuing piano studies all the way through high school. She attended St. John’s College, The Great Books School, in Annapolis, MD, and completed the intensive classical interdisciplinary program in Philosophy, Literature, Music, Languages and Sciences. It was there that she turned her musical focus and expanded into voice, classical guitar and songwriting while preparing to teach music.
In Austin she expanded into early childhood education and earned her Kindermusik certification to begin teaching early-childhood music at Capital Music in 2002. Teaching the music and movement classes led her to start teaching Music for Little Mozarts Piano, as a natural next step and transition for young children into instrument learning. She has been teaching for 12 years at Capital Music, now allowing her to specialize in teaching younger beginners with her early-childhood background. Karla performs and records regularly as a singer, keyboardist and vocal arranger in several Austin projects, including Alejandro Escovedo and Dana Falconberry’s bands, and her own project Nightblooms.
